Keelboats in 2022

Marconi’s club owned fleet of five SB20’s are available for members to sail on scheduled dates in the club calendar. Members must first of all sail with a crew of competent SB20 sailors to become familiar with the launching, rigging and sailing procedures of these boats, after which they may be able to put their own crew together.

Sailing opportunities are communicated through the club weekly newsletter and on the fleets Whatsapp group.

We’ve some great Keelboat events on our schedule for the coming season.

SB20 Bank Holiday Series (afternoons)

A series of 6 dates on which teams will compete in ‘medium length’ races from the club line. These events have been strategically positioned on the sailing schedule to allow those who race the dinghy series in the morning, to also put teams together to race SB20’s in the afternoons. Points will be awarded to each team (helm) to determine the overall Bank Holiday Series winners.

Event 1: 1st + 2nd May.
Event 2: 4th + 5th June.
Event 3: 28th + 29th Aug

Inter-Club Keelboat Competition

Marconi V Royal Corinthians

The Royal Corinthian YC at Burnham have challenged Marconi SC to two days of British Keelboat League style racing. Each club will enter a Youth team (14 – 20 years) a Ladies team and a Senior team, to compete on 707 keelboats at Burnham followed by a return match on SB20’s at Marconi.

The members of the teams can be different at each event, and Marconi members that would like to participate should contact Peter Ward to register their interest. The event will be competitive, with coaching afloat allowed throughout and feedback and further advice on umpire decisions and rules interpretation will be provided at the evening social after the days sailing.

Event 1: 15th May (sat) at RCYC Burnham on Crouch (707’s)
Event 2: 9th July (sat) at Marconi (SB20’s)

Jubilee Festival of Sail

On the 3rd of June the SB20 fleet will be available for casual sailing, cruising, and boat familiarisation whilst participating in the Marconi flotilla. An ideal event for our members that would like to sail keelboats with friends or family without the need to race.

Keelboat Crew Tune Up

Saturday 2nd July

A full day of British Keelboat League style racing with as many 15 minute windward / leeward races as we can fit in. The aim is to provide a competitive days sailing, with on water coaching, that allows teams that will be racing both in our match up against the Royal Corinthian club, and our own Keelboat Championship, to fine tune their techniques and tactics.

SB20 Keelboat Championship (Osea Cup)

Saturday 23rd July

A full day of British Keelboat League style racing in St Lawrence Bay, with as many 15 minute windward / leeward races as we can fit in. We’ll have a hospitality boat in the race area, ribs to facilitate boat changes and umpires calling the penalties as our teams do battle to become crowned the Marconi Keelboat Champions. If last seasons event is anything to go by, this will be a closely contested event, with the winners taking home the prestigious Osea Cup.

8th – 12th Aug

During the 2nd week of camping.

A series of longer course races from the club line.
