Becoming a member
We are delighted that you are considering joining Marconi Sailing Club (MSC) and applying to join could not be simpler. Membership is open to all - you do not need to have a Marconi connection.
We welcome members of all ages - you can join as:
- a Single or Family member
- a Retired Single or Retired Family member
- a Young Adult member
The Membership Application form is mostly self-explanatory and there are guidance notes on the last page but please e-mail or call our membership secretary if anything is unclear.
Whether you want to race or cruise, in dinghies catamarans or windsurfers - there's something for you at Marconi. Even if you don't have a boat there are usually opportunities to crew for someone on a regular or one-off basis.
The Marconi social scene....
Social life is an important part of club membership and you'll be invited to events ranging from the annual talent contest to our formal dinner dance held at the end of each season. In August each year, camping fortnight sees many club members spending a week or two living at the club - a truly carnival atmosphere. This is combined with our famous cadet week where the kids get tuition from the more experienced sailors - you'll find pictures elsewhere on the site.
Come down for a visit and see for yourself...
You really must come and visit us! We are easy to find and the drive to Stansgate is a pleasant one. You'll find directions and a map on the how to find us page. Drive slowly down the access road and you may be rewarded with a glimpse of our local rare breed cattle. Allow enough time for a walk along the sea wall. On Sunday you can buy an excellent snack and a hot drink from our Galley - or bring a picnic and enjoy the lovely scenery. You may also find a warm welcome at our snug Mamgu Bar - once you have signed in as a guest.
Most importantly, perhaps, you need to meet some members. Sunday is our most active day - although members are using the site every day of the week - and so is a very good time to see everything that goes on and to meet people.
Either turn up and ask to speak to the Officer of the Day, who will tell you all you need to know and make some introductions. Or contact our web administrator by e-mail info@marconi-sc.org.uk and we will arrange for one of the team to meet you on site.
Our approach to running the club...
We pride ourselves on being a self-help club and we have no employed staff (other than cleaners), so everyone mucks in and helps with what needs to be done. There's usually a working party at each end of the sailing season to keep the clubhouse and site in good condition. Members also get involved by manning our safety boats, helping with cadet week, or any one of the many roles that are vital to keeping a vibrant sailing club running.
Cruiser moorings
Our location and facilities are popular; if you require a deep water mooring for any sort of yacht it will probably be necessary to join the club in order to gain a position on the waiting list. Moorings Secretary, Peter Clayton will be pleased to advise on the availability of moorings on 01621 772841 or write to him at 11 Cripplegate, Southminster, Essex.
Motor vessels and trailer-sailers
We are most definitely a sailing club and, as such, we don't allow jet-skis, sports boats or any other type of motor boat to be launched from the club.
For safety reasons we don't allow trailer-sailers to be launched from a towing vehicle at the club. Smaller sailing cruisers can usually be accommodated on shallow water moorings (our Moorings Secretary, see above, will be delighted to discuss this option with anyone interested).
Our new electric winch allows the launching of heavier trailer-sailer style boats in safety so if you have a heavier boat that you don't want to leave on a mooring - again call Peter Clayton for advice.
