A record sum has this week been donated to a local charity by Marconi Sailing Club based in Steeple. The club holds The East Coast Piers Race every year with 2015 attracting over 75 entrants. Following the culmination of entrants fees and sponsorship Marconi have this week presented cheque for a mammoth £33,850 smashing last years figure by a clear £22,000! The Cirdan Trust based in Bradwell-On-Sea provide sailing experiences for under privileged children on one of their 3 yachts along the Anglian coastline. Report: Jenny Ball Photos: Chris Kirby The Marconi SC Sprint 15 traveller event took place on 26/27 September with 12 competitors taking part. Saturday was a lovely sunny day but lighter winds than the fleet would normally prefer, so the race officer set the race course in the bay to give some respite from the local tide. The first race saw the fleet converge on the windward mark in light conditions, making manoeuvrability slow and generally favouring those who did not find themselves tacking on the mark. An armada of boats of all shapes and sizes took part in a long distance race on Sunday 27th September organised by a joint committee of sailing clubs on the River Blackwater. The sprint started off the shores of picturesque Osea Island and saw over 90 boats on the start line. The race was organised by members of Blackwater, Harlow & Blackwater, Marconi, Maylandsea Bay and Stone Sailing Club and was held in memory of Olympic Gold medallist sailor Andrew “Bart” Simpson who tragically died in a freak sailing accident in 2013.
