Report by David Nickalls. On September 12th Jack Wardell and I went to Harlow Blackwater Sailing Club to compete in a Laser open meeting. We really enjoyed ourselves, there was bright sunshine for most of the day with quite a strong wind. As you can only sail at HBSC around high tide it had a very different feel to sailing at Marconi. The low tide toward the end of the racing meant that we had to be very careful coming in, and the launching arrangements made me appreciate the hard we have at Marconi. Over 80 Cadets took part in Marconi Sailing Club’s annual Cadet Week 2015 last week to enjoy 6 days of fun and training on the River Blackwater. The club caters for sailors of all ages and experience levels and tailors the tuition accordingly. This year a number of new members took part for the very first time, after having signed up to join the sailing club after its successful Open Day back in May. Cadet Week is fast approaching and the weather man has promised a perfect force 3 and 25 degree heat every day*. If you’re new to Cadet Week then at Marconi Sailing Club we have two weeks of on site camping available, spaces are usually booked in March ahead of time. I believe at this stage there are some pitches available for the second week only. Marconi Sailing Club (MSC) on the Blackwater estuary played host Wednesday to twelve chernobyl children from Belarus, giving them an unforgettable lifetime experience, which for many of them was their first time on the sea. The chernobyl children: six boys and six girls aged between 8 and 13, are on a one-month recuperative holiday organised by the Chernobyl Children Lifeline charity and travelled with a doctor and interpreter.  They have all been patients at a Childrens’ Hospital near the ill-fated Chernobyl nuclear power plant, where local communities continue to be affected by health problems thirty years after the nuclear disaster.  All…

In the past Marconi Sailing Club have had the use of a rowing gig for many major events including open days and Cadet Week. With this going down so well and with a view of increasing on the water participation, Marconi have been successful in getting Sport England grant funding to purchase our own rowing gig. Based on a traditional 19th Century design The East Coast rowing gig provides people of all ages and abilities with an opportunity to get on the water. 76 boats made their way to Marconi Sailing Club for the 2015 East Coast Piers Race weekend. The East Coast Piers race is a long distance sailing event for fast dinghies and catamarans.  The race weekend raises money for The Cirdan Trust and Essex Air Ambulance. With a fantastic forecast and free camping available all weekend many competitors arrived on Friday evening to set their boats up.
