Cadet Regatta Report 2003

Cadet Week Regatta Report 2003

Cadet week was rounded off with our annual Cadet regatta. The Cadet regatta invites cadets from other clubs to come and race with our cadets. The Cadet Regatta this year consisted of 3 very tactical races where a lack of wind made it very interesting.

Race 1

The first race started in almost no wind and many competitors didn't get across the start line. Those who did cross were mostly the more senior cadets, mostly in faster boats. These cadets were given a run for their money and also a fright when they turned their heads and looked behind them to see a Topper. The Topper was being perfectly sailed by the helmsman, Sebastian Hampson, and he was not going to give up in a hurry! He followed the fleet, who couldn't shake him off, until they rounded Number 1 buoy where the tide got the better of the Topper.

It was a close race from Fisheries buoy to the finish line. The Byte, sailed with skill by Tristan Hutt, was doing well until an unexpected capsize (in no wind!). The lead boats were together until the Stratos being sailed by Nick Miller and Tim Dowley and the two Laser Radials being sailed by Alex Dowsett and Anthony Monks pulled away to cross the line in first, second and third.

Race 2

The second race was also sailed by every one in almost no wind. The race was lead by many of the same boats as the first race. However, there was until an unexpected twist in the middle of the race, the lead boats all drifted off to Stone and Mitchell Glynn in Solo 4056 picked up the lead. The only two boats that eventually finished the race were Mitchell in his Solo and Sophie Hurrell-Smith and Sophia Shaw in Laser II 7666 who took second place.

Race 3

By the time of the third race the sea breeze kindly and quickly kicked in, to bring some fantastic racing for the whole fleet. There were some big battles in the last race not just at the top, everybody was trying to get those extra few places for their final result. It was a race victory for the Wardells sailing their Wayfarer, helmed by Catherine, who just beat Alex Dowsett to the post.
