Sail Training Days 2008

Sail Training Days 2008

The MSC Cadet Sail training days continue through 2008.

The dates are: MAY 17th, JUNE 1st, JUNE 22nd, JULY 6th, JULY 27th, SEPTEMBER 7th and OCTOBER 5th.

Start time for each session will be 10.30 with your boat rigged and you changed. If you don't have a boat but still would like to take part, don't worry, still come down and we will be able to pair you up with someone or swap around as necessary.

We take out two safety boats, the Cadet Rib and the Orkney, to provide the necessary assistance to Cadets.

Training Day Reports

Cadet Training Day 1 - 13th April 2008

The first training day of the year began with brilliant sunshine and a good breeze, however as boats were launching the wind seemed to drop and whilst sailing the sunshine soon disappeared.

The thirteen cadets who were sailing in Picos, Mirror and Laser managed to stay enthusiastic. Once on the water, the wind disappeared, however the cadets coped very well with these testing conditions. For many it was their first time back on the water this season. On the way back in for lunch the cadets tested their boat-speed control in follow the leader.

After lunch the weather was still a bit dull and so understandably fewer cadets decided to head out. In the afternoon there was some more wind and cadets sailed about in Picos. Over the day cadets managed to sail in both strong and light winds. Well done to everyone who took part.

Cadet Training Day 2 - 11th May 2008

There was glorious sunshine for the duration of the second training day of the year and also a good breeze. The day saw over 30 cadets taking to the water.

In the morning cadets reached back and forth from the hard in a variety of boats including lasers, toppers, picos and mirrors. Next cadets sailed over to the shore of Osea Island and sailed around a couple of 8 Knot Buoys to practice boat control and different points of sail. Just before heading in for lunch cadets practiced their boat speed control in follow the leader.

After lunch cadets sailed over to the north of Osea Island and tried to pick up the fender from the water. There were a few close shaves whilst everyone was trying to get hold of the fender! The return sail was very challenging due to the strong tide and the Osea Spit. A few cadets needed a tow to make it back however everyone sailed very well throughout the day. Well done to everyone who took part!

Next Training Day: Saturday May 17th
