26 Solos took to the water at Marconi Sailing Club on the River Blackwater on 1st June. The event was part of the Solo Eastern Area Championships and also a Sea Series event. Fifteen visitors complemented the eleven club members. Following a superb training day on the Saturday with bright sunshine and force 3 – 4 wind the weather on Sunday was disappointing with thundery clouds, no wind initially and a light breeze which never picked up above a 2.
Nevertheless the Race Officer John Weedon set a course and the first race started in a light Southerly wind on a course using the full width of the river. Andy Davis from Bartley set an early lead which was never challenged and it was left for others to scrap for the places. Steve Ede was second, Jerry Garner third followed by Dave Nixson and John Salmon.
Race 2 followed very much the same pattern although the beats were more interesting in the strong tide which changed during the race. Andy Davis first followed by Jerry Garner and Steve Ede.
With the tide now ebbing the fleet was being swept across the line at the start of race 3 resulting in a general recall. At the restart, Andy Davis was over the line and had to return round the end but made impressive speed to overtake all but three of the fleet by the end of the rather long race. Steve Ede won this race with Steve Denison second and Jerry Garner third.
