As you may have read in Navigans, there are dates set aside for Sail Training Days run by Bryan Spencer with the assistance of Lois. The aim of these is for Cadets to be able to demonstrate their skills and gain supervised tuition from Bryan informing them of where they are going wrong!
This is a great opportunity to get on the water, so get your parents to get your boats ready in good time then nag them to get you down to the club so you can take part. The dates for these are:
If you would like to attend but don't have a boat, don't worry. If you contact Bryan or Lois using the details in Navigans, or email them via info@marconi-sc.org.uk we will try and either find a boat for you or team you up on the day with another sailor.
Look forward to seeing you on the water soon.
The Sail Training Day that took place on the 22nd April saw 20 people set to the water over the day, with 12 boats venturing out to put some early season practise, in and to master their skills they left behind at the end of last season.
The second sail training day took place on May 6th; 27 people took part with the assistance of 5 people covering in the support boats.
By asking for people to be ready by 10.30am we were ready to go on the water by 11.00am.
A course was set off Osea Island using 2, 8-knot buoys & 2 temp buoys. This was done to keep us away from the club racing and keep away from the ‘M’ mark. Soon after getting out on the water we spent more time tying to keep every one together rather than training. We had a few capsizes though most were ok, but we did have a Mirror break a centre board while capsized. The crew was taken ashore and the Mirror towed into the club, at which point a few sailors started to get cold; so time for lunch.
At 1.30pm the wind was still blowing 3 to 4, but Lois had a treasure hunt and quiz as stand by which went down very well for those who did not want to sail in the afternoon.
On the water 6 boats went back out to the area between the Island and ‘C’ mark for a fun sail using balls playing tag, which was led by John and Caroline Nichols. After many capsizes the wind came up so we returned to the club.
Many thanks to:
Bryan, Lois, Sophie, Roy, Steve, Caroline, John, Colin & Harry for their help.
Sunday June 3rd was the 3rd Sail Training Day at Marconi. 28 people attended with 22 boats heading to the water sailing a course over on the other side of the river close to Osea Island. The wind was a little flucky but with a strong tide it took time for some to reach the course set by the Work Boat. Once grouped around the course, many were doing what was set out, which was to tack on a close reach and call Starboard on other boats when they were crossing their path.
The tide still proved tricky so it was decided to head in after a 2 hour sail. Some managed ok while others struggled to battle the tide with the little wind so required a tow.
After lunch it was decided to run a small theory session to teach the points we set out in the morning. Run by Richard and Lois, rules of the road, parts of the boat and points of sail were taught to all followed by a small quiz at the end.
The day was another success with thanks to Lois, Bryan, Richard, Sophie and Roy
The poor weather forcast on 24th June didn't put 11 cadets off that attended the 4th Sail Training of the year. Dispite the rain, 8 boats set off from the hard to sail a figure of eight course round the 8 Knot buoys over by Osea. Once everyone was there, we then took a few boats at a time to work on their boat control skills using the "follow my leader" technique behind the club rib. This was a useful demonstratation of skills to find out who understood how to control their boat. While this was taking place, a few enevitable capsizes occured with the other sailor so it was decided to head in for lunch after an hour on the water.
The afternoon saw a bit more rain, but that stopped by the time we left the hard although some sailors didn't want to venture out in the afternoon. Those that stayed on dry land did a fun competition with Lois. With only two cadets in the afternoon, Tom and Abbi, Richard and Brian were able to coach them to perfect their sailing techniques, from the tacking and gybing to sheeting in and also to there boat controls.
The day was enjoyed by all despite the weather with thanks again to Lois, Bryan, Richard, Sophie and Roy (and one other, name TBA!)
Again another successful training session.
More cadets took part in the Sailing training day. Again another successful session.
The next event will be in 2008.
