2008 Burnham on Crouch Cruise

Saturday to Monday 24 - 26 May 2008

A number of crews assembled in the Mamgu bar on the evening of Friday 23 May to enjoy a drink, discuss plans for the weekend and listen to the forecast before going afloat for the night.

Saturday dawn bright but windy. C’estMoi had departed on Friday evening for Mersea and Marmalade for the lee of Osea leaving Trumpeter, Southern Hey, Killara 11, Seabrume, and Charlotte at the Club. Discussion both on the shore and between boats ensued about the weather prospects before skippers and crews went their separate ways. By now the weather was showing every sign of matching the forecast of strong winds.

Killara 11 opted to go for a day sail after consulting C’est Moi about and engine fault which thanks to Derek’s previous experience was easily rectified.

Southern Hey and Charlotte opted for the easy route back to Chelmsford while, later in the day, Trumpeter, Killara 11 and Seabrume made their way to Burnham, albeit by road, for the evening BBQ.

By now there was a good force 5 to 6 from the north east blowing across the moorings at Burnham and looking over the sea wall conditions were quite uncomfortable and getting ashore would have been extremely awkward.

However the crews were able to enjoy a convivial evening, eating, drinking and exchanging yarns in the comfort of Carol and Maurice’s caravan before some departed for home.

Sunday in Maldon was bright but very breezy and Monday with its force 5 to 6 winds with horizontal rain is best forgotten.

Another blown and washed out weekend when the comfort of dry clothes, land and fire was infinitely preferable to time spent afloat.
