They came, they dined, they danced the night away.
This year's laying-up supper was a huge success, being held for the first time at the Stock Brook Manor Golf and Country Club.
Members were served drinks on arrival and mingled in the bar prior to the meal. The event was attended by club members of all ages and, as usual, it was an eye-opener to see friends who we thought were born in drysuits wearing something less... well; less rubbery!
We were entertained for the early part of the evening and throughout the meal by an excellent cocktail pianist with an extensive repertoire of background music.
The food was served by extremely professional staff and was a great success - the round tables contributed to excellent dinner conversation and the room was the perfect size.
Following the meal Chris Davies (Commodore) proposed the loyal toast and then "Marconi Sailing Club". He then went on to present some of the year's most prestigious sailing trophies including Helm of the Year (Dan Kirby), Marconi Challenge Cup (Kevin Kirby, Michael Miller), and the Ladies' race (Jenny Ball).
Mike Boreham MC'd the evening with his usual mix of formality and panache and the bar seemed under siege from diners seeking wine and other medicinal tinctures.
Following the prizes, the evening moved into full-on party mode as the disco started. It was not long before folk were out on the dance floor doing their thing. The DJ managed to find a good mix of tracks both ancient and modern - there was something for everybody.
A cariacaturist was present for the first part of the evening and amused many diners by capturing their good looks on paper.
For those taking a brief respite from the dance floor there was a great lounge area for us, complete with real fire and numerous armchairs and sofas. This proved a great success and revellers oscillated between the mayhem of the disco and the country-house atmosphere of the lounge. Via the bar. As you can see from the accompanying pictures - a great time was had by all!
As usual - click on a picture to access the larger version. Additional pictures can be found here.
(Review)They rocked. They rolled. They brought the roof down. Now we have to make an insurance claim. (Kidding!)
A great evening building on last year's success; Shazam were welcomed by a good crowd in the clubhouse for an early-season knees up. Those who can remember the Shadows are now in no fit state to get anything up - let alone their knees, but nevertheless the trip down memory lane was well worth the bus fare.
New members' evening - 13th MayOlly was as good as his billing; new members were welcomed, guests from the Byte Open and Solo Opens joined us in the bar...
Another success for the social committee.
A professional caller and band called... well I'll get round to that.
For now let me explain that this is the premier social event of the summer and everyone - and I mean everyone will be there. No skimping on the grub... there will be a hog roast. Are we having a marquee again? Will there be revelry and hilarity all round? Has England won the world cup yet? Oh yes - the band... is called St George and the Trombone. Tickets £15 from Wendy H-S (pictured left). Unmissable.
Win and da so-sonic cru will cook up somethin happenin for da piers, man. Whateva.
There will be a separate programme announced later in the year for this. Book the first 2 weeks in August now.
