2009 Tollesbury Cruise

Saturday 6 June & Sunday 7 June

The turnout for this event was surprisingly good considering the predicted weekend weather forecast. Eight boats slipped their moorings around 0930 on Saturday 6^th June. The passage was a bit bumpy to start with as we had to motor against a strong easterly and a fast flowing flood tide. Things became more comfortable as the boats turned northerly cutting across into Tollesbury Fleet then westerly, and north westerly for the last bit of the passage to the marina entrance. Suruca took the scenic route by crossing into the buoyed channel at red can number 3 following up the rear of the others. With the boats sorted out in their respective berths people then started gathering on various boats for a chat. Some people mainly ladies took a walk to the village and then back across the fields. Some of the men exhausted from the passage chose to rest a while with a glass or two of refreshment, but a couple of chaps did brave the swimming pool. The evening brought us all together in the Tollesbury Cruising Club where twenty-four of us gathered for a sociable evening. Everyone was giving good comments about the meal, the service and the facility, which is a relief when organising an event that includes food. Due to the weekends strong wind forecast and the fact they were both going to be single handed, Trumpeter and Charlotte made the wise decision to go round by car to join us all for the evening meal. Sadly Twiga had to cancel due to a sudden family bereavement. A special thanks to both Neil and Barbara Pembleton together with John and Doreen Chisnell for making the journey by car to join us for the evening meal. The start to Sunday 7^th was very wet and very windy but this didn’t deter some of our ladies going for a 9.0 am swim in the pool. The wind did ease during the morning but there were still some frequent strong gusts. There was sufficient height of water over the marina sill for most of our boats to start leaving at around 11.15. With the sun emerging and the wind now eased the passage back to MSC was comfortable and most of the boats had sails up. The event surprise surprise was not without a few ‘hic ups’ a couple of boats had minor scuffs in the marina including Suruca but it was not my fault I must say to any Cock Up Trophy Whistle Blowers. I was parked in my berth at the time and caught by a boat returning to its berth next to me. One boat returned to MSC only to find its mooring had been dragged, another returned to find its tender had gone walkies, and Suruca’s crew were blessed with an outboard engine that had no drive. Fortunately Roger Camp offered us a most welcome tow back to shore. After the usual chats ashore reflecting on it all, Suruca’s crew headed off back to sunny Hockley, but not before yours truly had a quick look at the new tractor shed the build still in progress, it’s going to be another great facility for our club.

Suruca, Green Panther, Serupin 2, Southern Hey, Shell Seeker, Tahiti, Dreamer, and Snowgoose.
