We held our first open day for quite some time in June 04 - backed by advertising on local radio and in the local papers. We weren't quite sure what to expect in terms of numbers, so we prayed for fine weather and held our breath.
As it happened, we couldn't have picked a better day. The Saturday dawned fine and bright with a light breeze and a crowd of willing volunteers gathered early at the club to prepare for the first guests.
Our club secretary set up his desk on the hard - in case any of our visitors wanted to join - that was the idea of the day after all! Fleet captains waited on the hard with sailors and boats; yet more volunteers prepared to act as tour-guides for the day.
Then it hit us! As the gates opened the crowds were already queueing and it wasn't long before the registration team had run out of forms and were sending out for more. On the hard, Roger Camp was busy finding more cruiser sailors to accomodate all the people who wanted to get out on the water on a big boat - cats and dinghies were plying the waterfront with a stream of guests looking to get afloat.
By the end of the day, we estimated more than 300 people had come through the gates, and more than 20 new members had joined. The weather had been kind and everything went like clockwork.
Many thanks to all the volunteers who gave up time to make the event such a success. Here, with thanks to Dave Onyons of Hill House Photography, are some of the pictures from the day.
